Start with something simple

“¿Qué tal?” is a friendly way to ask how someone is doing. You could answer “Bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?” — “Good, thanks. And you?” You don’t need a memorable opening line. A simple question gives the other person an easy way into the conversation.

Find a shared subject

Try “¿Es tu primera vez aquí?” — “Is this your first time here?” It works when you’re both visiting a place or attending an event. If the moment feels right, “¿De dónde eres?” means “Where are you from?” Share something about yourself as well, so it feels like an exchange.

Ask one more question

Follow the thread instead of switching topics immediately. If someone mentions food, “¿Qué me recomiendas?” — “What do you recommend?” — gives them room to tell you more. You can keep your questions short and still show interest.

Have a phrase for getting stuck

“Estoy aprendiendo español” means “I’m learning Spanish.” Pair it with “Más despacio, por favor” — “More slowly, please” — when you need a little space. The aim is a shared conversation, and asking for help can be part of it.
