Lingotapas ("we", "us") is operated by Lingotapas Inc., based in Ontario, Canada. This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use lingotapas.com and our community, why we collect it, and what choices you have. We've written it in plain language on purpose. What we collect
Information you give us. When you download a free resource, join the community, subscribe, or contact us, we collect what you enter: typically your name, email address, and anything you write in a form or message. If you subscribe to a paid membership, our payment provider collects your payment details; we do not see or store your full card number.
Information about how you use Lingotapas. Our website and community platform record standard technical information (device type, browser, pages visited, approximate location from your IP address) and, inside the community, your activity such as courses started, sessions attended, and posts made. We use this to run the service and understand what's working.
Cookies. We use essential cookies to keep you logged in and to make the site work. On our public website, Google Analytics loads only if you select Accept analytics. You can reject analytics or change your choice at any time using Cookie settings in the footer. We remember your choice in your browser for up to six months. Rejecting analytics does not prevent you from using the website. Circle provides our embedded forms and community and may use its own cookies for those services. You can also control cookies through your browser settings; disabling essential cookies may stop parts of the site working.
Why we use it
We use your information to deliver what you asked for (send you the phrasebook, give you access to the community, process your subscription); to run and improve the service; to send you emails about Lingotapas, which you can opt out of at any time using the link in every message; to respond when you contact us; and to meet our legal obligations, such as keeping billing records.
Where data-protection law requires a legal basis, we rely on: performance of our contract with you; our legitimate interests in running and improving Lingotapas; your consent, where we ask for it (for example, marketing emails to people who haven't yet joined); and legal obligation.
Who we share it with
We don't sell your personal information. We share it only with the providers we use to run Lingotapas, who process it on our behalf and under contract:
- Circle — hosts our community, courses, live video sessions, forms and email workflows
- Stripe — processes payments
- Cloudflare — hosts our public website
- Google Analytics — website analytics
Some of these providers are located outside Canada, including in the United States and the European Union. Where your information is transferred outside your country, we rely on the provider's contractual safeguards and, for UK and EU residents, on approved transfer mechanisms.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of Lingotapas, our members, or others.
The community
Anything you post in the Lingotapas community — including your name, profile photo, and messages — is visible to other members. Live sessions may be recorded and made available to members; if you speak or appear on camera, you may be in the recording. Please don't share personal information about other people without their permission.
How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as you have an account or a relationship with us, and afterwards only as long as we need it for the purposes above or as the law requires (for example, billing records for tax purposes). If you ask us to delete your account, we'll remove your personal information within 30 days, except where we're required to keep it.
Your rights and choices
You can access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you, object to or restrict certain processing, ask for a copy of your data in a portable format, and withdraw consent where we rely on it. To exercise any of these, email privacy@lingotapas.com. We'll respond within 30 days. If you're in the UK or EU, you also have the right to complain to your data-protection authority.
You can unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time using the link in the email. We'll still send you essential messages about your account, such as billing receipts.
Children
Lingotapas is for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes
We'll update this policy when our practices change and post the new version here with a revised date. If a change is significant, we'll tell members by email.
