A little longer at the table
Sobremesa is the time spent at the table after a meal, talking rather than immediately moving on. It gives this blog its name: a space for the conversation to continue. You don’t need a special occasion, an elaborate meal, or perfect Spanish to take part.
Start with the moment you’re in
A question about the food is an easy place to begin. “¿Qué lleva este plato?” means “What’s in this dish?” Or try “¿Te gusta cocinar?” — “Do you like cooking?” Let the answer guide your next question. You don’t have to arrive with a whole conversation prepared.
Leave room to listen
You may not catch every word. That’s an opportunity to ask “¿Puedes repetirlo, por favor?” — “Can you repeat that, please?” If someone speaks English to help you, you can thank them and ask to try a little more Spanish. A conversation can move between languages and still be a connection.
Take the idea with you
Try leaving a few unhurried minutes after your next meal. Ask a question, share a story, or practise a phrase with someone who’s learning too. Think of sobremesa as an invitation: stay a little longer and see where the conversation goes.
